Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is relatively new in the world of martial arts. Jiu-Jitsu itself dates back thousands of years to Japan and was an art used by samurais on the battlefield. If, for some reason, their weapon was lost, this was the style of fighting they used for hand to hand combat. History naturally evolved the art but none so much as when it was exported to Brazil via Master Mitsuyo Maeda. While the Gracie name is synonymous with BJJ, it is with Master Maeda that all BJJ lineage begins.
Professor Curuma comes from a long, proud line of legendary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighters, as can be seen in his lineage of elite figures in the art. His academy enjoys affiliate status in Brazil's famous Manimal Family Jiu-Jitsu Federation, founded by Grand Master Carlson Gracie, Sr. student and 6th Degree Black Belt, the esteemed Master Luis "Manimal" Carlos Matheus. Giving honor to Professor Curuma's Brazilian roots, Team Curuma competes under the IBJJF banner of the Duda Castro Team of the Carlson Gracie Academy in Bahia, Brazil.
